How to: Remake Old Lip Products

This diy is a great way to remake old chapstick. If you have a broken tube of chapstick that you really like, you could just melt it without adding coconut oil, and then pour it back into the tube.

You will need:
Coconut oil
Jar/microwave safe bowl
Old chapstick and tube

So, I started off making three chapsticks. I’m going to be honest, and tell you that I wasn’t impressed how they turned out, and then I’ll tell you how I did it again, correctly.
I tried melting my chapsticks over a candle because I saw a lot of other people did it that way, and it seemed like it would be easier to take pictures. Learn from me, and please do it in the microwave. Using a candle, you have a much higher chance of burning yourself.
First, I took my old chapstick out of the tube by screwing the tube all the way out. I could then pull out the stick of chapstick. If you are doing this, be sure to save the little piece of plastic at the bottom of the chapstick. Make sure you screw this back into the chapstick tube.
I didn’t really like the color/scent, so I just threw it away.
Then, I added a little bit of coconut oil to my jar and melted it.
After the coconut oil melted, I added a little bit of an old lipstick/chapstick.
This is where I think I went wrong, because I had too much coconut oil, and too little pigment. I’ll show you in a second what I mean.
Then I waited a moment for it to melt.
This is my old chapstick tube. As you can see, I didn’t really bother to wash it out. I did peel the label off, however.
Then I filled it with my new chapstick.
As you can see, I spilled a little bit. So if you do this, you should put a plate under it. You can either leave the tube out at room temperature to solidify, or you can put it in the freezer or refrigerator.
This wasn’t the tube that did it, but I had one tube that started leaking out of the bottom. I thought it would be fine if I left it in the freezer, but it started leaking again when I left it in the sun.
Here are all the chapsticks on my arm, compared to their original pigments I added. I was slightly disappointed because they seemed to not have much actual color.

^Here are all my colors. I was rather disappointed since they didn’t seem pigmented enough, and they all looked the same.
So I tried again, with the same method, but I added about half as much coconut oil, and I mixed three shades of pigment. (the pigments that I mixed together are the three on the side.)
I liked this color much better. I made this last weekend, and I’ve worn it several times this week, and I really love it. Just a word of warning, you do NOT want to carry this in your pocket. Coconut oil has a very low melting point, so it will probably turn to liquid and leak in your pocket.
